Abstract
First two years of life is a critical periode for infant’s growth, development and health. Adequate nutrient intake during this periode is of particular importance for infant’s optimal growth and future health. For healthy mothers giving only breast milk for the first six months of life is recommended since breast-milk can infant’s nutritional requirements. Whereas above six months the breast-milk alone is not adequate especially for fulfilling energy and micronutrients needs thus complementary food should be introduced. Mother’s with good knowlegdes on appropriate feeding practice especially for complementary food is proven to improve young children’s health and nutritional status. This cross-sectional study involving 90 mothers together with their’s under-five year-olds children. Respondent characteristic was assessed by structured questionnaire. Mother’s knowledge on appropriate complementary food feeding practices was assessed with focus group discussion (FGD). Child’s weight, length and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were measured by digital weighing scale, mictoise and MUAC tape, respectively. Digital camera was used to describe the area of study. Results showed the mean±standard deviation of mother knowledge’s scores were 7.9±4.3. More than half of mothers (58.9%) had good knowlegde on appropriate complementary food feeding practices while about a third of them still in poor knowledges. Intensive appropriate feeding practices’s education should be performed to improve and facilitate good practices among mothers in Kedaung Barat area.
